Fourth & Fifth Grade Classes Attend Wood Magic Forest Fair PDF Print E-mail

How many students in South Carolina can tell you that for every tree harvested, 5 more are planted in their place? And how many students realize that products they use every day such as chewing gum and toothpaste come from trees? Thanks to their recent field trip to Wood Magic Forest Fair, Newberry Academy's Fourth & Fifth Grade Class can answer these and other questions about forestry in our great state! Jointly sponsored by the SC Forestry Association, the USDA Forest Service and the SC Forestry Commission, Wood Magic Forest Fair's goal is to teach children how important forests and forest products are in their everyday lives. Through a variety of hands-on activities led by forestry professionals from several organizations, students increased their awareness of the importance of sustainable forestry and learned how trees can be harvested for thousands of useful products that improve our daily quality of life. Our students had a wonderful experience and we thank Wood Magic Forest Fair for such a great opportunity!

Our Lower School Excels in Learning! PDF Print E-mail

Newberry Academy's Lower School students have been keeping busy learning exciting new things since they have returned from Thanksgiving Break. Mrs. Pruett's 2nd Grade Class & Mrs. Wilbanks' 4th Graders gathered together to see if Mr. Pruett could crack open a Moroccan geode, estimated to be 300-350 million years old! The students learned how it was formed and were amazed at how beautiful it was on the inside once it was opened! The 2nd Grade Class also had a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and visit with Dr. Clarissa Jakob, a pharmaceutical scientist, inventor, and researcher for AbbVie, which is located in North Chicago, Illinois. The students asked some very thought-provoking questions, and even told Dr. Jakob about their own scientific experiments. We are so thankful for all the great opportunities our students have to learn each and every day!

Congressman Norman spoke to our students in grades 8th - 12th about the importance of taking the time to discover their skills and interests now, and using them to their fullest potential to succeed in their future educational and occupational pursuits. He shared how inspiring it is to see so many young people interested and eager to be involved in public service and encouraged everyone to continue to stay informed and involved in both their community and nation. Following his presentation, students has the opportunity to ask Congressman Norman questions about his experiences in politics and his stances on a variety of important issues. We want to thank Congressman Norman for taking the time to visit our school and share his invaluable insight and motivational stories with our students and staff.
