All grades are offered something from the media center from a research center for the older students to a reading library for the younger ones. The media center offers details on SC Discus for the students doing term papers with assistance from the media specialist. Programs for the middle scholars include Scholastic Reading Counts, South Carolina Children's Book Award and Reach for the Stars. Elementary students have the opportunity to visit the library once a week during a regularly scheduled time. They participate in many programs such as Scholastic Reading Counts, South Carolina Picture Book and Children's Book Awards, Reach for the Stars and the Governor's Reading Honor Roll. All students have the opportunity to visit the Scholastic Book Fairs and participate in Summer Reading. There is an award's program held each May to present all of the awards. This program is held during the school day and on the front lawn if weather permits. In our library there are many fiction, nonfiction and reference books. There are books for all ages. There are also computers available for research and for Scholastic Reading Testing. Last year there were over 400 books and 200 tests bought to improve the library. Many help support this valuable resource for our school. Some past sponsors of the Summer Reading and Scholastic Reading Counts programs include Stokes-Trainor, Walmart, First Community and West Electric. Parent's Council also buys many books and tests for the library. Without these our programs would not be the success they are. Thanks for all your help.

The requirements of this program are for your child to read at least 20 books over the course of the year. This program is offered for students in grades 1-4. You should keep up with this in a reading log throughout the year and in April, you will be asked to turn that list in to the librarian. This is the easiest of the programs to participate in and it would be easy to be one of the schools that has 100% participation. |

This year, we will be offering only one book fair in October. These are held in the school library. The proceeds are used to buy books, prizes and test for all of our library programs. These fairs help provide most of the 400+ new books and 200+ quizzes for the library each year. Without the success of the fairs, the library would fall well short of the student’s expectations.
Thank you for support the library in this way.

Reach for the Stars is a pledge-based reading incentive program for students in grades K4-6. The goal of this program is for the participants to read (or be read to) 300 minutes or more over a 10 day period. This is an average of 30 minutes per day. Education experts encourage routine daily reading and recommend a minimum of 30 minutes every day. The students collected pledges from family and friends, and then log their reading for two weeks. The children hopefully developed a daily reading routine, which establishes a habit that can last a lifetime! They also received books for one half of all of the money that they raised for the school.
The school received the other half of the money raised by the children. It was spent by purchasing books and Scholastic Reading Prizes from the current Usborne Catalog. Our school library received almost $2600 worth of books and prizes. Congratulations to the children and the parents for surpassing the expectations. |

Our program requires the student to read 3 of these books and pass a test on the books that they have read. At the end of the year library program, these students are awarded with a certificate and a special treat. At program's end the students who completed the program vote on their favorite.
