Junior Civitan

Junior Civitan is a youth service club dedicated to developing "Builders of Good Citizenship" in the home, school, community and nation. With 11,000 members across 350 clubs and four continents, Junior Civitans have a huge impact on the world around us!

Newberry Academy’s Junior Civitan club works to give students in Grades 7 through 12 the opportunity to develop initiative and leadership and to encourage them to live a fuller life enriched by selfless service to others, with a focus on living the Golden Rule in all human relationships by precept and example. The club takes on a variety of school, community and environmental projects throughout the year, such as faculty breakfasts, Christmas basket and Give-A-Can drives, Pencils for 1st Graders, assembling lunch packs for local elementary schools, community clean-up through Adopt-A-Highway and much more.

Newberry Academy's Junior Civitan Club has had a very busy past couple of weeks! Last Friday the Club hosted their annual "Catch the Excitement" Party, which was a wonderful evening of fun, food and fellowship! Party attendees were asked to bring a toiletry item, and the Club was proud to be able to donate a basket of 50 items to the Pride Pantry at NCDSNB. The Junior Civitan Club officers also had the opportunity to attend a Club Officers & Advisors Training on the district level. Newberry Academy Junior Civitan Receive Top Honors PDF Print E-mail

Newberry Academy's Junior Civitan was recently recognized at the South Carolina Junior Civitan District Convention, held in Myrtle Beach on May 5th through 7th. The Academy's Junior organization, which consists of 61 members, received numerous awards for their involvement in community service and outreach throughout the 2016-17 school year. These included: First Place "Club Spirit" Award for their involvement in All-District events; Second Place "Collection Selection"€ Award for hosting their canned food drive; Second Place "Environmental Project of the Year" Award for their school garden project; Second Place "Community Project of the Year" Award for their assistance with the Newberry County Disabilities Special Needs Board's Spring Gala "Lights, Camera, Pride"€, and; First Place "Special Friends" Award for their participation assisting with the Special Olympics. Additionally, Junior Amy McJunkins was recognized as the District's Female Junior Civitan of the Year for her outstanding leadership and service to the organization.

During the Convention, elections were held for Junior Civitan District Officers for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Five Newberry Academy students were elected to top positions, including the District's top positions of Governor and Deputy Governor. The new Junior Civitan District Officers included: Amy McJunkins, Governor; Kathryn Wilbanks, Deputy Governor; Ashlin O'Connell, Area 3 Lieutenant Governor; Sara Gray, Public Relations Coordinator, and; Amber Suber, Correspondence Secretary. In honor of Junkins' position, the District's Junior Civitan Governor's banner will hang in the front lobby of Newberry Academy for the duration of the 2017-18 school year.

The school year has gotten off to a great start for Junior Civitan! The students welcomed back both new and returning teachers with a delicious breakfast during their in-service days, as well as passed out brand new pencils to Newberry Academy first graders beginning their first year at the "big" school.
