2018's Head of School for the Day PDF Print E-mail

Being the Head of an independent school just might be a little harder than one might think. Gavin Wilson, a 6th Grader at Newberry Academy, learned this firsthand when he took to the halls on Thursday, May 17th as the official Head of School. His family was the winning bidder on this year's special "Head of School for the Day" experience, which was up for auction at the Academy's Blue & Gray Gala. Our Head of School worked with colleagues to arrange a day that would not only be fun, but would give Gavin a real understanding of what this leadership role truly entailed.

"What students often don't realize is that there is so much more to running a school,"

"From observing classrooms to handling budgets to fixing a leaky toilet, there is not a moment of the day that is not entirely devoted to the caring for our school."

Gavin began his day by reading the announcements over the school's PA system, followed by announcing his "Executive Order" for the day: recess and free computer lab time for all 6th Grade students starting at 1:00pm, as well as no homework for the day for the entire 6th Grade. After completing several teacher evaluations throughout the Middle and Upper School, Gavin visited WKDK Radio, where he was interviewed live on-air about his new role during the Morning Coffee Hour Program. Once back at school, he observed several of the Lower School classrooms and talked with the students about their activities, and then hurried to the kitchen to assist the school's Food Coordinator with serving students at the morning biscuit break. One of the experiences he called "most enjoyable"€ was visiting the Academy's Preschool, where he got to check in on the activities going on with the 2K-5K classes and even read a story to the 5K Class. He was then treated to a special private lunch from Sonic with two friends of his choosing - and he lovingly chose his brother Wyatt and his sister Lauryn so they could be a part of his special day. After lunch, he had the opportunity to meet either via phone or in person with several school officials - from the Chairman of the Board of Directors to the Athletic Director to the Dean of Students - where he learned how each of these roles impact the day-to-day operations of the school.

After enjoying a fun afternoon of recess and computer games with his fellow classmates, Gavin was presented with a framed copy of his official Executive Order, along with a special gift bag of Newberry Academy goodies. As his final act as Head of School, Gavin read the afternoon announcements over the school-wide intercom, and even took a moment to share a special pun with everyone: "All the square students were doing great in geometry. It was their area."

"The day certainly put Gavin through his paces, and he showed all the key qualities of a leader,". "I was so proud of how hard he worked today and how professionally he handled everything." He also added with a laugh, "I think he learned a lot during this experience, including the importance of a good pair of shoes. Headmasters do a lot of walking!"
